As children, the companions played in the courtyard. They startled butterflies while sweeping fallen flowers; climbing old trees, they picked sweet fruit. Rattling drums thumped and shook, bamboo horses kicked up dust. The mother called, but no one answered. Cooking smoke curled as the sun tilted westward, unaware their clothes were caked with dirt.
