Human lives were like rivers upon the earth, rushing onward toward the sea. Jade endured instead, like stars suspended in the heavens, silent and remote in illumination. The warmth of lantern-lit alleys, of gatherings and partings, of laughter and tears—though they might compress eternity into a single instant—remained to Her like flowers seen through mist, forever observed from beyond.
